FLIR aims to raise the scope of human vision to a whole new level. A company that specializes in increasing our awareness and perception, FLIR has a whole host of systems ranging from thermal imaging, visible-light imaging, locator, measurement and diagnostic, to advanced threat detection systems. We are most interested in the newest addition to their product line, their smartphone thermal imaging systems – the FLIR ONE and FLIR ONE PRO. By hooking up one of these products to your smartphone, you can turn it into a device that can allow you to see an expanded view of the electromagnetic spectrum – in other words, you can “see” heat.

The FLIR ONE and FLIR ONE PRO

The FLIR ONE is a small device that attaches to your smartphone. With both iPhone and Android versions, the company boasts that the FLIR ONE will fit most phone cases, making it accessible to a wide range of people. So, let’s say you were to buy the product – now what? What would you do with it once you have the capability to see heat?

FLIR ONE Smartphone Input
The idea of thermal imaging via your smartphone is a pretty cool concept, but what are the practical applications of such a thing? The FLIR ONE opens up a new world of possibilities in the realm of sight. You can use it to search for a lost pet at night, or even during the day, as thermal imaging is not affected by visible light. Speaking of animals, you can also use this to identify if there is a bear threat near your campsite. Pretty handy if you don’t want to get eaten.

The FLIR ONE also can be used to find potential leaks in your home so you can protect your walls, floors and ceilings before mold even starts. If you have an air leak, FLIR ONE can help you find it and restore energy efficiency to your home. It can even help you spot electrical overload connections before there’s a major problem. FLIR says this device is a handyman’s dream, which got me thinking about its potential use for contractors. Whether you’re a DIY man or a professional, FLIR ONE could help reveal issues that will either save or make you money. The FLIR ONE PRO has all of the same uses and features, with a few added extras that would really only benefit a professional inspector or contractor.

FLIR states that the FLIR ONE is not just for serious work – it can also be used for play. They mention on their site that the device can be used to put a cool spin on a game of hide-and-go-seek (totally cheating unless everyone’s got a FLIR ONE). Take it on hikes to spot wildlife, or navigate trails in complete darkness. I suppose the practical applications of the FLIR ONE are limited only by one’s own imagination and their ability to have fun.

FLIR ONE and FLIR ONE PRO Features

The FLIR ONE has two cameras that blend images from both a Lepton thermal camera and a VGA visible light camera to create enhanced thermal images with great resolution. It can measure temperatures from -4°F and 248°F (-20° to 120°C). That’s a pretty wide range of heat. It’s got a decent warranty as well, which covers material and workmanship defects for one year, or eighteen months when you register the product.

FLIR ONE Dual Cameras
FLIR ONE uses an app to operate on your smartphone, and comes with some extras that are bound to impress. There are seven “dynamic video palettes,” or scenes, to choose from – rainbow, B/W, W/B, artic, contrast, iron, and hot/cold – so whatever your thermal imaging needs may be, FLIR’s got you covered. The app has additional functions called TimeLapse, Panorama and CloseUp, and allows you to share to social media platforms. Awesome. If you ever dreamed of having nightvision as a kid, FLIR ONE is a dream come true.

Now – the FLIR ONE PRO. As mentioned before, this is a device for the professionals. It has the same temperature range as the consumer grade FLIR ONE, but can detect temperature changes as small as 0.18° F (0.1° C). With the PRO, you can generate reports, or connect and consult with professional thermographers to double-check your work. FLIR ONE PRO uses the company’s latest image processing, VividIR, which provides the kind of crisp image enhancement with fine detail that any professional requires for their work. Needless to say, we’re looking forward to reviewing these products in the future.

Availability and Pricing
