WiFi is the glue that holds smart home automation together, because without WiFi, your devices are not talking to your phone, tablet, or computer. Whatever other protocols – Z-Wave, Zigbee, Insteon, X10, those solutions hubs need a way to talk to your personal interface – your smart phones, etc.

Wifi ImageWiFi could be considered the hub of today’s new generation of smart home automation, but it does not support mesh. The more devices you have, the more noise you have and the less clear of a connection there is between your smart home products.

It is of the utmost importance to have a bulletproof WiFi system in your home if you are going to be using products that speak to each other and your phone via WiFi. If you need an excuse to upgrade to faster internet equipment, here it is: Get a new, better router more reliable Wifi. For those with homes that are more than one story, or generally large, a single WiFi router can get help to cover the entire home by using WiFi or powerline repeaters.
