Matter is making waves in the smart home industry, connecting products and ecosystems that were previously kept apart, uniting them in a common language for smart home products. The biggest names in town are backing the technology – Google, Amazon, Apple, to drop a few – allowing you to use smart products from any of these companies without fear of incompatibility if they are Matter-enabled. Matter allows you to expand your ecosystem to cross-brand products and control them with Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, and Bixby simultaneously. The type of device you use to control can be any of these voice assistants, hubs with apps, smart speakers, or apps. Perhaps Queen got it wrong in their famous line, “It doesn’t really Matter, to me.”
Matter, and all these Matter-enabled devices, make building a smart home ecosystem an easy and enjoyable experience. Matter not only reduces the time and complexity of setup, it speeds up response time, as it’s completely local. Your devices should respond as fast as you expect your typical “dumb” gadgets to. More than two dozen companies are already on board with Matter, with a wide range of product types from lighting to door locks and thermostats, so you can truly customize your smart home to suit your needs.
How does it work? Matter uses a Thread border router to link your Thread mesh network of smart products Wi-Fi. Thread border routers don’t need to be a tradition bridge or hub – they can be smart speakers, light bulbs, thermostats, TVs or even a smart refrigerator. Some Matter enabled products are Thread border routers, while others simply have Thread technology, so it is important to know what you have, or are buying, at least when beginning your journey with Matter. Note that if you have smart devices that require a hub or bridge to work, you will still need one. Google, Samsung, Apple, Amazon, and Amazon’s Eero have existing devices that are Thread border routers that support Matter, and more gadgets will join the fray in 2023. Our editor at SHA uses the Eero, and quite likes it. Let’s take a look at smart products that currently support Matter, have confirmed they will, and are projected to in 2023.
